After a damn quarter

How can I describe my feelings about this quarter? Hate, loneliness, feeling useless and empty, losing academic desire and joy, feeling deceived...bla bla bla [many more which I prefer not to write any more]

The only thing I dreamed of was seeing the end of quarter without going insane!

I *really* do not want to write anything about first ~10 weeks of the quarter. But a quick summary may be helpful for those who are new to my blog (and my life!). Concentrating on a random exam and missing most of the classes of first three weeks. After learning that I failed the exam miserably (for which I studied 3+ months) I realized that it is already the half of the quarter, which means MT time. Missed rest of the classes with lack of motivation...With the anger of the notorious exam I took classes which I am really do not have enough background. Working hard hard hard just to catch up with the material. Finding an evil class project in my hands. More than one disorganized classes...Breaking my personal record of sleepless nights in a row...

Then Spring came, with white flowers and beautiful smells...

As a son of Spring, my spirit have the ability to speak with Spring. Everything changed two weeks ago. As the rains passed away, all the bad feelings gone from my soul with the lukewarm spring wind...

I do not know what changed me that much, most probably just the weather. It may also be a little word or a spofes. Maybe all of them or none of them, who knows? May be I have not changed at all, I just recovered from a nightmare. Frankly, I don't need to know the reason. The only important thing is I am back!

I fall back to my original plans. (Which is good, after months of discussion with myself, I finally have a decision!) I guess I am on the right track for now, but will see together :).

(For the curious : Did I completely abandon the plan for going into business? No, not actually. Say, I postponed it for the time being.)

Finals. Neither I had the energy nor the motivation for studying the finals.

Although I feel much better at finals period, it is hard to learn everything in two weeks. So I tried to do my best. I was tired of these weird classes. I hope next time I will be wise enough not to pick all fantastic classes for my study list. I do not care about the result of this quarter that much actually. Since this was my worst quarter in all terms, I hope this will be my all-time dip, and my trend starts to going upwards.

Phoenix will eventually born out of its ashes...

I do not believe legends or miracles. But what I believe is everything cannot go wrong forever. Some kind of an evil combination of events put me in that bad mood, and some kind of another combination recovered me back. I am feeling much better now.

What is next? [Yes, this is the most important question.] I would like to let Vivaldi answer it for me. After L'Inverno, it is time for La Primavera (which is my favorite of all four!).

What is next, in the near future? Spring break, time for relaxation and refilling my energy bars!

It is all about "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly"...

This period of time taught me so many lessons. I am feeling much more mature. Now, I know most of the people are intrinsically not good. Nothing (including human beings) is as good/bad as it seems. Truths are painful but they are still the truths. You cannot change all those things by staying passively and waiting I to come and make Tetris. You have to show your ugly face to the world. May be that's why people put up faces, eh?

Yeniden Müzik Keyfi

Son 10 yıl içinde, geleneksel şekilde dağıtılan müzik albümlerine pek ilgi göstermediğimi söyleyebilirim. Alternatif müzik dinleme aracı olarak radyoyu (ve televizyonu) çok sık kullandığımı da söyleyemem. O halde benim gibiler için geriye kalan tek alternatifi (dijital müziği) yoğun olarak kullandığımı tahmin edebilirsiniz.

İşin etik boyutu hakkında konuşmama gerek yok durum ortada ve biraz karışık.

Ama ben, insanların mp3'ler ile bu kadar haşır neşir olmasını sadece bedava olmalarına bağlamıyorum. Bence şu nedenler çok daha önce geliyor:

1. Bir albümde yaklaşık 10 şarkı oluyor, ama genelde 1-2 kaliteli şarkı dışında gerisi ittirme oluyor. Kimse, istemediği şeylere para vermek zorunda değil, hele bu parçaların bir çeşit zorlama yöntem ile, "ya hep ya hiç" mantığıyla dağıtılmasına hiç anlam veremiyorum. Üstelik burada tam ters yönlü bir hırsızlık da söz konusu, yeterince emek harcanmamış mallar da iyilerle birlikte araya karıştırılıyor.
2. Müzik erişilebilir olmalı. Herhangi bir şeyi istediğim zaman istediğim yerden dinleyebilmeliyim. Bir şeyi dinlemek istediğimde, gidip albüm alıp geri gelmeyi deneyerek bütün hevesimi kaçırabilirim yada gider dijital alternatiflere çok kısa bir süre içinde erişirim. Özellikle popüler kültüre ait olan müziğin bir kullan-at tarzı ürün olduğu unutulmamalı. Karnım acıktığında fast-food tercih ediyorum, müzikte de bu böyle olmalı. (Üstelik pek çok klasik tarz müzikseverin geleneksel ortamları dijital ortama tercih ettiğini biliyorum. O halde herkes yaptığı müziğin yapısını bilmeli ve ona göre pazarlanmasını sağlamalı.)
3. Albümlerin materyal malzemelerine para ödemek istemiyorum. Kalitesiz çalışmalarının görüntü güzelliğini arttırmak adına harcadıkları paraları benden tahsil etmeye çalışmalarına anlam veremiyorum.
4. Yukarıdaki 1. ve 3. maddenin özeti gibi olacak ama, aldığım herhangi bir ürün için performans/fiyat analizi yapmaya hakkım var. Pek çok ek masraf ile, geleneksel dağıtım yöntemleri benim dinlediğim bir kaç şarkı için günümüz şartlarında çok yüksek kabul edilebilecek bir rakam talep edilmesi beni soğutuyor.
5. Öyle veya böyle, çok sayıda ve farklı farklı müzik dinliyorsam, bir sanatçı yerine bir dağıtımcı ile anlaşıp toplu alımlarımın karşılığı olarak indirim bekleme hakkım var.
6. Para verdiğim bir müzik eserinin artık kaç yılında ortaya çıktığını bilmediğim manyetik bantlı kalitesiz kasetler şeklinde bana verilmeye çalışılmasına anlam veremiyorum. Her anlamda ucuz olduğu halde, aynı albümün CD ortamında dağıtılan hali için daha fazla ücret talep etmelerini iki yüzlülük olarak görüyorum. Daha kaliteli dinlemek için, neden daha fazla ücret ödeyeyim ki, zaten en kaliteli haliyle dinlemek benim hakkım.
7. Satın aldığım bir müzik eserinin aynı kalitede -bedava- kopyalarını çıkarıp, istediğim gibi taşıma özgürlüğüne sahip olamama anlam veremiyorum.
   

Kesinlikle, öyle veya böyle, telif hakkı olan çalışmaların karşılıksız dağıtılmasını beklemiyorum. Sonuçta fiyat belirleme hakkı telif hakkı sahibinde, ama bu belirledikleri fiyatlarlar ile dijital müzikle yarışmaları da imkansız. Öncelikle mantıklarını değiştirmeleri gerekir. Birincisi, dijital müzik "korsanlık" değildir, mp3 de gerektiğinde telif hakkı yönetimine imkan veren bir dosya biçimidir. Dijital müzik kendi dağıtımlarından daha kalitesiz değildir. Dijital müzikle, her gün medyaya çıkıp duygu sömürüsü ile de mücadele etmek de imkansızdır. En iyi yöntem olsa olsa kendi ürünlerini artık bu ortamda pazarlamaya başlamaktır. Daha rekabetçi bir ortam olduğu için daha çok zorlanacakları aşikardır, ama yine de sırf bu rekabet korkusu yüzünden "bu kötüdür" demek suretiyle bu işten kaçmak mümkün değildir.

Peki bu kadar sıraladık, çözüm yok mu? Var. Mesela, ben "Yahoo Music" kullanıyorum, hem telif haklarını ödüyürum vicdanım rahat, hem ucuz ve kaliteli müzik dinliyorum. (Maalesef Türkçe müzik için iyi bir alternatif değil, en azından şimdilik). Bunun dışında iTunes, Napster vs. gibi alternatifler de mevcut. Umarım Türkiye'deki telif hakkı sahipleri de birgün dijital müziğe karşı bakış açılarını değiştirirler ve gerçekleri görürler. Biz de böyle,ce Türkçe müziğin keyfini yeniden çıkarabiliriz.

En iyi OS, kaşarlı MacOS

Son 2 gün içinde kullandığım bilgisayar işletim sistemi ikilileri, rasgele sıralama ile şöyle:

1. PC/ Windows (XP Proffessional)
2. PC/ Linux (Ubuntu)
3. PC/ Solaris
4. Sun/ Solaris
5. Mac / MacOS

Aradaki versiyon vs. farklılıklarını da eklemeye lüzüm görmüyorum. Bu kadar şeyi gerçek anlamda rasgele bir sırayla, arka arkaya ve uzun bir müddet sonunda kullanınca insanın kafasındaki bilgisayar anlayışı da değişiyor.

Bir kere bütün bunların arasından Mac'i ayırmak isterim. O bir bilgisayar değil, bir melek...

Windows, bildiğimiz alıştığımız tad, fazladan bir şey anlatmaya gerek yok. Günahıyla, sevabıyla her zaman hizmetimizde. Linux, desen benim gözümde Windows ile karşılaştırılabilir. Alışılmıştan farklı olduğu kesin. Ama estetik, güvenlik, hız, dayanıklılık vs. gibi kriterler açısından Windows'a göre daha iyi. Bedava olması bence o kadar da büyük avantaj değil. Windows dediğin de o kadar pahalı değil zaten.

Buraya kadar her şeyi biliyorduk. Gelelim yeni şeylere, Sun/Solaris ikilisine. Birincisi, bu Sun makinelerin work station diye yutturulması çok acayip. Aletler bir acaip. Hem yavaşlar, hem de ortalama bir PC'nin 2.5 katı büyüklüğündeler. Aynı oranda da gürültü çıkarıyorlar. Solaris desen, işletim sistemi falan değil, garabet bir şey. İç yüzünü, işleyişini bilmiyorum, ama görsellik sıfır. (Gözümle gördüm! :))

Hiç bir şey diğer bilgisayarların standart ile örtüşmüyor. Kopyala yapıştır işlemi için Alt+W, Ctrl + Y ikilisini, Geri Al için Ctrl + Shift + Minus kısayolunu kullanan makine mi olur demeyin. Oluyor. Mouse davranışları desen bir acaip. Anlatmayla olmaz görmek lazım. Anlamadım gitti ne iştir.

Hazır başlamışken, bir kaç bir şey de yan yazılımlar için söyleyeyim.. Öncelikle, JAVA mükemmel bir şey. SUN'ın hakkını bu noktada verebilirim. JAVA ile yazılmış her şey, her yerde çalışıyor. ( Ama yavaş çalışıyor, orası da ayrı mesele...) Örneğin MATLAB, her yerden erişebiliyorum, mutluyum.

Browser'lar hakkında da şunları söyleyebilirim. Her işletim sisteminin kendine has bir browser'ı var gibi. Ama Firefox/Mozilla hemen her bilgisayarda bir şekilde çalışıyor. Alışkanlıklarınızı pek değiştirmeden web'de gezinmek için Firefox, bu anlamda da çok ideal. (Sadece not düşmek açısından yazıyorum, son 2 gündür kullandığım browserlar, Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, IE, Safari :) )

PS: Herhangi bir marka/işletim sistemi vs. fanatiği/bağımlısı değilim. Elimden geldiğince nesnel olmaya çalıştım.

PPS: Aşırı geyik bir başlıktan sonra, biraz sıkıcı bir yazı oldu kusura bakmayın. Bundan sonraki yazılarımda teknik konulara pek bulaşmamaya uğraşacağım.

*my* Digital Camera and Luck

(This is a continuation from "How to Buy a new Digital Camera and Fate".)

I received my camera 2 days ago. First hear this more interesting story. I was tracking my package from internet. And at about 6:55 pm, I saw my packaged delivered at 6:20 pm. I was like WHAAAT? I look in front of my apartments door, and voila my package was there. What kind of world are we leaving on? The delivery guy, did not knock my door but instead left the package there. I have learnt that there was a package, in front of my door from the internet. All madness...

Beyond this, my luck went good again with this camera issue. Amazon just gave an offer for a memory card with a purchase of a Canon camera. I send them an e-mail and they let me use this offer, although I bought my camera before this offer. (I ordered a Viking 1GB SD memory card, waiting for it now. Instead of listening the door for the delivery guy, I am just more frequently checking the tracking web site!) (And now, they listed out both the camera and the offer, am I one of the lucky persons who saw them together in 2 days period???)

I really did not have enough time to play with the camera. It has a two hundred sth. long manual, and too many features to learn. And definitely I am not going to read it. I can learn by myself.

And as a final remark, in the future -but not in the near future- you can expect too see some amateur photography related posts here, as my skills improve. Hopefully...

After Sun Tour

(This post is a continuation from "Going to Sun" )

There is not much really to tell about the tour. Most of the presentations were boring and had out of scope topics. We had a company tour, which was mostly like next-generation-technologies demo. I can say it was exciting and inspiring. From the "field trip", I get a rough idea about what "Sun" is thinking about the future of computing. I can summarize some of the basic points as:

• Software is going to be free (and opensource?) for all users.
• Network will expand tremendously, but the end-user interfaces on the edges of the network will be some kind of simple, less power consuming, easy to maintain (and cool!) devices. Complexity will go inside the network.
• Anything, not connected on the network does not have a bright feture. (ipod??)
• Power consumption will be the one of the most critical aspect of the designs.
  

I do not want to go into details, which are not that important or interesting. But I'd like to mention some interesting moments.

• When we are having our lunch in the conference room, a guy entered the room. Nobody knows who he is. I may be exaggerating a bit, but he looks like some service worker, who does not know anything about what is really going around. He started talking about, why we should chose Sun, he gave some simple examples etc. He was speaking intelligent enough, talking about some really interesting stuff. But nobody really cared who he is. He was a person, just passing around. When he was leaving the room, he said if we want to ask sth. we can send an e-mail to him. Everybody was like, "yeah, sure I will". Then he gave his e-mail address "C_E_O at sun dot com"... [No comment!]
  
• There was a some kind important meeting going on, there were some ppl from press. And obviously there was a big cake with company name and logo over it. They also served us, and some photographers shoot our photo. May be, I am going to have a picture in a tech-magazine, who knows. [Internal Sound - I know. Don't worry you won't have a picture in a magazine!]
• Listening a some really important guy (even without knowing who he is!) gives you so much intuition. It feel really enthusiastic about knowing what he thinks about future of networking, computing, software etc... He also talked some about what to do after college. Which is really a hot topic for me nowadays.

These are all important & interesting points for me from the tour. I hope you like them too.
